Disappointment, coupled with big, splashy images of angry men destroying things: that was the common theme among front pages throughout Canada this morning.
As the sun came up on a ransacked Downtown Vancouver, the city’s citizens (and those in other Canadian cities) were greeted with some of the more destructive images from last night, along with bolded, one-word headlines (“Mayhem” is how the Province described it).
The Toronto Star’s cover is one of the best of the bunch, but not for its headline and image (although both are memorable). Rather, it’s because of a quote that perfectly sums up the mindstate of someone who thinks that overturning a car and lighting it on fire is a perfectly reasonable thing to do:
“This is releasing tension man,” he told the Star. “What else are you going to do when you lose the Stanley Cup? You riot.”
