WNBA Star Cappie Pondexter Apologizes For Insensitive Tweets About Japanese Earthquake
March 14 / Glenn Davis / SportsGrid
In light of the horrific events happening in Japan over the last few days, people around the world banded together in support of the nation. People raised awareness, raised money for relief efforts, and generally showed concern for an area afflicted by the worst of indifferent nature. And then, there was star New York Liberty guard Cappie Pondexter.
She at least faced up to it (and didn't claim that, for example, her Twitter got hacked), as well as retweeted someone who had some pretty harsh things to say about her. But we're still not sure of any other "manner" her words could have been "interpreted" than, "Wow, she sounds like she thinks Japan had it coming." Needless to say, it's pretty easy to see how that might have offended many, many people, whether that's what Pondexter intended to do or not.
Maybe she really will learn from this. Maybe she'll be a model citizen from here on. It's possible. But it's going to be hard to forget remarks like these even if she does. She's a phenomenal player, and it's too bad she took the focus off that by saying some pretty terrible things. Cappie, as a fellow Scarlet Knight, I'd love to be able to defend you, but...damn.
