Dan Patrick On SportsCenter Reunion With Olbermann: Only If I Get To Fire This One Guy At ESPN
For a good chunk of the 90s, Dan Patrick and Keith Olbermann were the Mario and Luigi of sports highlights. That may not sound like a huge deal to someone born after 1995, but believe me, Mario and Luigi used to be cool and "SportsCenter" was once must-see TV. Those guys owned it.
In fact, they even coined the phrase "This...is SportsCenter" after some producer told them to stop introducing the show as "The Big Show," hence the sarcastic dramatic pause.
On his NBC Sports simulcast Thursday, DP somehow got on the topic of a "SportsCenter" reunion with his former partner, who recently ended his second stint at the network. As you might expect from one of The Worldwide Leader's most public critics, the topic opened a small but interesting can of worms.
Dan agreed to do a SportsCenter reunion for $100,000, plus the chance to fire his arch-nemesis: some producer who's still onboard "The Mothership."
"All right 100-grand and I get to fire this guy live on the air," he said. "Then I start, 'SportsCenter' is next."
"You told me before when we were on the road if we run into this person, get in between us," his current executive producer Paul Pabst said. "You said, 'Don't let me..."
"I know," DP interjected, acknowledging that he once instructed one of The Danettes to keep a fight from breaking out in the event he ever crossed paths with this mysterious douche. "I've been better. At the time I wasn't being facetious. I'm better -- just because I'm the bigger man."
Um, all in favor of bringing Dan Patrick back to do a SportsCenter with Keith Olbermann for ESPN's 40th anniversary in 2019 to watch him berate some suit at ESPN, raise your hand.
