Dirk Nowitzki Says He Partied Harder After Losing The NBA Title Than After Winning It
Dirk Nowitzki had a good time after winning his first NBA title. There was the night out right after, the parade, the first pitch...oh, and that plane ride. But even without all the partying, Dirk would have been feeling good. He was finally a champion, after all. What happens when Dirk has to party away the agony of defeat? Well...exactly what happened when the Mavericks lost the NBA Finals in 2006. Yes, things got crazy.
Dirk shared the details with the Dallas Morning News, acknowledging he's "had some good nights" since lifting the Larry O'Brien Trophy, but adding he's in his 30s now, so he can't go as crazy as he did at a time when he had a whole lot less to celebrate:
And how devastated I was after losing the Finals in '06, so I had to go on a three-week drinking binge just to forget everything.
Man, three-week drinking binge? He did take that loss hard! Maybe too hard. He continued:
That's the funny thing, I am older now than I was then.
Hmm, doesn't seem so funny to me...just the irreversible course of nature.
I actually think we partied harder in '06 when we lost just to forget about it than we did now.
Oh, so that's the strange part. But as he explains, he really did hate losing that much that he would go to extreme lengths not to think about it:
In '06, Jet picked me up for the party bus almost every day, and we went somewhere just to make us forget and have a good time. We ended up in Vegas after three hard weeks. This year, we've had a couple of good nights, but I'm 33. My body can't recover, so you have to party one day, and the next day you have to be off. You can't go back to back when you're that old.
Well, at least he knows his limitations. To us, the funniest thing about this is if it came out that, say, LeBron James partied hard for three straight weeks after losing this year's Finals, there would be endless hand-wringing and talking-head shouting about how he just doesn't care enough, that he doesn't want it badly enough.
And as far as we know, Dirk's post-loss bacchanalia is a revelation to the general public*, but given the amount of crap he's taken over the years, we expect that had his hard-partying style been in the news in '06, the backlash might well have lasted right up until the Mavericks won the title. It's a reminder of just how easy it is to make snap judgments and read too much into the actions of people. If anything, Dirk partied so hard five years ago because he cared too much. And maybe he can't quite hit that level anymore, but he's got some wild nights left in him:
Partying once in a while gets old. But I'll definitely put in some good work when I get to Germany when I see my friends, definitely be a couple of good nights there.
Is there anyone who can read this and not have "partying in Germany with Dirk Nowitzki" shoot up near the top of their list of life goals? If there are, we don't think we know that person, and we definitely don't have much desire to.
*According to one commenter, we're off on that, and some of Dirk's '06 photos did make the rounds and did cause something of an uproar. If that's the case, just goes to show how little can really be gleaned from such photos.
