ESPN Book: The Time A SportsCenter Anchor Got Drunk And Peed In A Bottle At A Crowded Night Club
Those Guys Have All the Fun, the highly-anticipated ESPN book by James Andrew Miller and Tom Shales, will hit shelves next week. We've been lucky enough to receive an advance copy, and throughout the day will be highlighting some of the books' more interesting tidbits.
Gary Miller currently works for CBS Los Angeles, doing nighttime news casts and pregame shows for the Dodgers. Before that, he hosted a radio show called West Coast Bias on KSPN in LA. But what he's best known for is his 14-year tenure at ESPN, in which he anchored SportsCenter, hosted Baseball Tonight, and occasionally did play-by-play for MLB games.
During one such occasion, when he was in Cleveland covering an Orioles-Indians game, he visited a popular nightclub called Papa John's Basement. After enjoying the company of his ESPN colleagues and overindulging in some cocktails, he found himself alone. Or, as Miller puts it:
So I'm upstairs and and eventually everyone leaves, and I'm pretty hammered and I'm one of the only people left up in this back room.
Miller really had to pee, but upon seeing that line for the bathroom was "all the way across the bar," he found an empty bottle in the corner. In the corner where, it's never made entirely clear (was he in the corner of a closet? Or was he in the corner of the dance floor?), but, needless to say, Gary Miller pissed in a bottle, Dumb and Dumber style, in a crowded Cleveland night club.
No sooner than Miller started zipping up than he was grabbed by police officers and accused of urinating out of a nearby window and onto a police officer below. The cops, who were messing with him pretty much the entire time he was in custody ("Oh, what's ESPN going to think of this?" Miller remembers them saying), locked him up for the night. He was later charged with public indecency, aggravated disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.
Eventually, he would settle out of court and enter a no contest plea to disorderly conduct. To this day, Miller swears he never pissed out of any window. The bottle stuff? He doesn't dispute that.
