These Runners Are Either Bravely Defying Nature, Or Insane
October 29 / Glenn Davis / SportsGrid
As you probably know, we on the east coast are dealing with a bit of a weather issue today. This issue means none of us at SportsGrid are leaving our places of residence today, and quite possibly not tomorrow, either. (You're very welcome that we're all still working through it, by the way. Well, as long as we have power.) In Hoboken, N.J., where I'm based, about the only people who've gone anywhere since late yesterday are the people in ground- and basement-level apartments who were ordered to evacuate.
But there are a few exceptions to the "everyone stays inside" thing. Like a stray surfer here and there. And runners. Runners are devoted to running - so devoted that they might appear cultish at times. Like when CNN gives a live report near the water in New York City and people keep running by, refusing to let potentially extreme weather interrupt their routine (via jose3030):
In fact, there were probably more people trying to brave the elements than usual, thanks to this upcoming Sunday's New York City Marathon. While many now have to worry about whether they'll arrive in New York in time for the event, those who are already there had to figure out how they were going to deal with the hurricane. These guys from Italy decided they'd run anyway. Runner JP Pablo took this picture of himself running through Queens:
Indeed, whether you think people are daring or just stupid for doing this probably depends on whether or not you're a runner. I can only base it on my own experience, since I'm not a runner and see those people on CNN and wonder why they're even bothering with it. Everyone will probably just have to agree to disagree... except about the runner with the horse head who was out and about earlier today. We all have to agree that guy is the best.
