Kevin Bacon Throws Out First Pitch At Minor League Game…But Not That Kevin Bacon
Tonight, the Richmond Flying Squirrels, a Double-A San Francisco Giants affiliate, held an interesting promotion - Tribute to Bacon Night. This promotion contained the types of perks you might expect out of a bacon-themed night (not that this makes them less awesome):
Fans can enter to win a year-long supply of bacon courtesy of the Virginia Pork Industry Board and Smithfield Foods, and all fans will receive a coupon for a discount offer on their next bacon purchase.
But the Flying Squirrels didn't stop there. No, the team went the extra mile and brought in none other than Kevin Bacon to throw out the first pitch, and made him available for autographs. There was a catch, though. You think of Kevin Bacon, you think of this guy. Here, though, is the bio of the guy the Flying Squirrels trotted out to the mound for tonight's pregame ceremonies:
Bacon, a Chesterfield County native for more than 35 years, is currently a detective with the Chesterfield County Police Department. He works with the unit that supports the Chesterfield County and Colonial Heights Crime Solvers program. Bacon was recently elected as the Area Director for the Virginia Crime Stoppers Association after spending more than 10 years on his current assignment. He is a graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University with a bachelor's degree in Administration of Justice.
Hmm. No mention of Diner. Because, as you can plainly tell, the Flying Squirrels had some random local guy who also happens to be named "Kevin Bacon" throw out the first pitch. It's kind of brilliant, actually - as is the team's graphic promoting Tribute to Bacon Night, featuring a photo of their Kevin Bacon laid over some faded background photos of the better-known version. We weren't as fond, however, of this quote from Flying Squirrels COO Todd Parnell:
"Having [Bacon] here will definitely add some extra sizzle to a night we were already planning to ham up."
Ugh. UGH. UGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. Anyway, we're off to try and connect the two Kevin Bacons in six degrees or fewer.
