Last night's ESPN "30 for 30," titled "One Night in Vegas," took a look at the relationship between Mike Tyson and Tupac Shakur, two of the more iconic, polarizing figures in recent American history.
Tyson and Shakur had spent months forging a relationship based on shared experiences, but their paths would cross for the final time on September 7th, 1996. On that night, Tyson took the WBA title from Bruce Seldon at the MGM Grand in front of a packed house of juiced-up onlookers. One of those onlookers was Shakur, who was sitting ringside with Death Row Records head honcho Suge Knight. Shakur and Knight's car was shot up later that night as they waited at a stoplight, and Shakur would later die from the gunshot wounds he suffered.
Tyson and Shakur's friendship had formed in the months prior, when both had served time in prison. But they shared far more than both being ex-cons. In addition to knowing what it was like to be extremely famous and locked up, they both shared the view that American society was out to get them, in one way or another.
On that night in Vegas, society got Tupac. Here, Tyson describes the last time he ever saw Shakur alive, and his reaction to his friend's murder.
