Your Latest Star Wars-Themed Sports Cover Arrives…Via Germany
When the New York Post designed a special Star Wars pullout cover in advance of the Jets' playoff win over the Patriots earlier this year, we had a hard time imagining it could ever be topped. Well, we still wouldn't say it's been topped, but we certainly saw another attempt at a Star Wars sports cover a lot sooner than we'd have thought...and this one originated all the way over in Germany.
11 Freunde, a German sports magazine, recently put out an issue prominently featuring a season preview for Bundesliga, Germany's top club soccer league. That's to be expected - Bundesliga's about as big as it gets in German sports. What's not to be expected is how they went about grabbing our attention for said preview:
And it worked.
While there aren't as many crazy things going on as there were on the Jets-Patriots cover (and we're far less qualified to judge how fit every person is for the Star Wars character they represent), we'll say this: that's about the happiest we've ever seen someone either preparing to fire a blaster or wielding a lightsaber. (People featured, according to Dirty Tackle, include Bayern Munich striker Mario Gomez as Leia, VfL Wolfsburg manager Felix Magath as Darth Vader, "mad [and very happy] genius" Jürgen Klopp, manager of Borussia Dortmund, as Luke Skywalker, and another Bayern Munich star, Arjen Robben, as C-3PO.) And this, it seems, wasn't a pullout cover - this was the, first-thing-you-see-when-you-see-the-magazine, actual cover.
Additionally, we marveled at how pervasive a cultural influence Star Wars is upon learning the man responsible for the Post cover isn't even a Star Wars fan. Well, what does it say about the movies' impact that magazines in Germany are referencing the films on the cover of what we imagine is one of their more highly-anticipated issues? And as best we can tell, a cover like this isn't par for the course for 11 Freunde - generally, they're a bit more low-key. Not here, though...and for that, we couldn't be happier.
