That Channel That Had The NHL And Jenn Sterger Has A New Name
When the Outdoor Life Network rebranded itself as Versus in 2006, many were hoping that it would finally provide a legitimate national competitor for ESPN. That obviously hasn't been the case, but its parent company is hoping that another rebrand will remedy that situation.
Comcast has announced that starting on January 2, 2012, the Versus moniker will disappear, as the channel will be reborn as the NBC Sports Network.
"This is more than just a name change for Versus," NBC Sports Group boss
The move appears to be a logical one. The NBC brand is known for its coverage of the Olympics and Super Bowls, while Versus has become the channel that you couldn't find when you were trying to watch professional hockey or cute girls talking about sports.
It will take more than the NBC name to compete with ESPN on a national level, but it's certainly a step in the right direction for a channel that can be found in approximately 70 million homes (ESPN can be found in 100 million, by the way).
