The Great Michael Kay-Mike Francesa War Of 2014
Mike Francesa is a pompous ass. There, we said it. He openly holds himself and his career in such obnoxiously high esteem without a shred of humor or humility. Who can blame him -- 50 years ago a guy like Francesa would've just become a farty scout for a minor league baseball team, but because of sports talk radio, he's a force of nature. Good for him, we guess.
Michael Kay, on the other hand, is almost always angry. Unlike Francesa, who carries his show with a muted, snarky bravado, Kay gets really worked up and then spews out brash criticisms that exhibit his lack of empathy more than his worldliness/knowledge of sports. He also replaced Francesa on the YES network's radio simulcast, as Francesa moved to Fox Sports 1 where he is often bumped for European soccer (a sport he indignantly refuses to understand).
Kay believes Francesa left YES because YES was disappointed with how soft he went on Alex Rodriguez last year when the admitted PED-user rushed to MIke's studio to proclaim his innocence after storming out of court room because he didn't want to testify under oath. Francesa says he left because YES wanted too much editorial control. Kay -- who has done play-by-play for Yankee games since the 90s -- took Francesa's explanation to be an accusation that he, meaning Michael Kay, was a yes man for the YES network (sorry, had to do that).
Kay thinks Francesa is lying about why he left. Kay also hates Francesa (rightfully so). Kay is also jealous of Francesa (rightfully so). Francesa pretends to not give a shit -- which pisses of Kay even more.
"I’m No. 1 today," Francesa said. "Last time I looked it’s 2014. I’m still No. 1. I’ve got a long-term contract, beautiful family. I’ve got Mink here. What else would I want?"
I dunno, some humility?
