The first Presidential debate is over, and now the spin cycle begins. Even though some polls have Donald Trump losing the encounter by as many as 40 points, there’s a #TrumpWon hashtag trending on Twitter, and many Republicans are calling it a tie.
The spin includes the New York Post, whose headline this morning is “Don, Not Out” over a big picture of Trump, with the subhead “Trump Survives, And That’s Bad News For Clinton.” If you mean that he didn’t dissolve into tiny ashes and blow away in the wind like Voldemort, then, yes, I suppose.
But you can look at polls or read headlines and you’ll never get a more accurate debate picture than observing the memes. Above is one of our favorites, and commemorates Trump’s unfortunate attack of the sniffles during the big night. Howard Dean actually speculated that he may have done cocaine before he went on. (Trump, predictably, blamed a faulty mic).

It really was a country ass-kicking, not that it’s going to make all that much difference, probably. Other polls have shown that debates don’t wind up moving the needle all that much — and in this case there are two more of them.
