There’s A Bollywood-Inspired Ice Hockey Movie, And Rob Lowe Is In it
Well aware of the fact that the last Indian-themed sports movie (Bend It Like Beckham) did very well for itself, Bollywood producers are undoubtedly hoping that their venture into the world of Canadian ice hockey yields comparable success.
Rob Lowe stars in Breakaway as the dude who reluctantly agrees to coach a team of "10 guys in turbans all named Singh" as they attempt to supplant the perennial powerhouse Hammerheads and bring home the Hyundai Cup. Camilla Belle — better known for her role in When a Stranger Calls and as the ex-girlfriend of Joe Jonas — doubles as Lowe's sister and love interest for the film's protagonist, Rajveer Singh (played by Vinay Virmani). Russell Peters also has a role. As does Ludacris.
Set in suburban Toronto, the film tracks a young man struggling between traditional Indo-Canadian family expectations and his dreams of hockey stardom.
So basically, it's the classic tale of what happens when cultures collide, and the two attractive leads have to find a way to be together despite inevitable family disapproval. Meanwhile, there's a squad of haughty white guys that needs to be taken down, and a sarcastic coach presumably caught in an existential crisis.
We're guessing it all works out for the unlikely couple in the end, though, as the trailer blatantly shows them making out in the middle of a crowded hockey rink with people cheering in the background.
There looks to be a lot of traditional ensemble dancing, as well as an awkwardly-placed rap/hip-hop club scene (I guess that explains the Ludacris cameo). Early indications from the trailer are that the best one-liners belong to Raj's father. Watch below:
Much like his character, who got roped into coaching a dysfunctional team of non-Canadian misfits, Rob Lowe was also actively recruited by one of the film's executive producers, Akshay Kumar. Jury's still out on whether he is regretting this latest career move.
