The Tour de France's first week is its most dangerous, and the presence of automobiles throughout the peloton is a further threat to the safety of riders.
This was made evident Sunday as a TV car swerved into the race leaders, sending riders sprawling and one (Dutchman Johnny Hoogerland) into the adjoining farm's barbed-wire fence:
Miraculously and despite what must be the worst case of road rash in history, Hoogerland returned to his bike and resumed the race.
