WATCH: Germany Defeats Uruguay 3-2, Diego Forlan Hits Off Crossbar In Closing Seconds
July 10 / Dan Fogarty / SportsGrid
Germany has defeated Uruguay 3-2 in a game that, while ultimately meaningless, was one of the most exciting of the tournament.
Ironically, the third place game, the very idea of which may turn off many Americans, was exactly what most Americans would find exciting. A total of five goals were scored, and a number of them were quite awesome (the prettiest was Diego Forlan's one-timer on a cross).
Sami Khedira scored in the 82nd minute to give Germany a 3-2 and, ultimately, their second straight third place finish in a World Cup.
With Uruguay down by a goal in the 92nd minute, Forlan had one last shot to send the game into extra time. Unfortunately, his shot hit the crossbar, and Germany gets the bronze medal.
