Which U.S. Sports Franchise Wastes More Money Than Any Other? (Hint: Rhymes With Twix)
My favorite site, NerdWallet (mostly because of the name) has done it again. The financial planning folks have crunched the numbers and constructed a list of the least-efficient U.S. pro sports franchises in terms of finances.
In other words, which franchise gets the least productive athletes and fewest wins in relation to the money it spends? (The NHL and MLS weren't included in the study).
Hint: four of the bottom seven are from the state of New York. And the winner is ...
The New York Knicks, in the least surprising news you've ever heard. Yep, the Knicks waste more money than any other team.
Some of it is out of their control, such as Kristaps Porzingis suffering a hip injury five minutes into his pre-draft workout.
Much of it isn't, such Arron Afflalo (two years, $16 million) and Robin Lopez (four years, $54 million).
The bottom 11:
82. Los Angeles Dodgers
83. Houston Texans
84. Washington Redskins
85. Arizona Cardinals
86. Buffalo Bills
87. New York Mets
88. Oakland Raiders
89. Cleveland Browns
90. New York Yankees
91. Detroit Lions
92. New York Knicks
The top three most efficient franchises, possibly to no one's surprise, are:
1. New England Patriots
2. San Antonio Spurs
3. Miami Marlins
Sorry, never would have guessed Marlins that high.
