Why Is Doug Gottlieb Being Such A Dick About Caitlyn Jenner?
Eric Goldschein 09:23 am, June 02nd, 2015
When Caitlyn Jenner emerged from the long, decorated shadow of Bruce yesterday for the first time, most people recognized it as a woman finally living her truth and expressed pride and happiness for her. Of course, not everybody responded the way our parents taught us to as children -- namely, if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say it at all. CBS Sports' Doug Gottlieb was one of those people.
We shouldn't be surprised: Gottlieb, like most radio personalities, is a certified troll who makes his living by annoying people when they're trying to watch sports. Yet his reaction to the news of Caitlyn is the kind of ugly mix of ignorance and selfishness that needs to be highlighted so other people who honestly don't know better don't get fooled into thinking Jenner's decision was some kind of whimsical publicity stunt. This is a nuanced, complicated topic that can't be compared to anything Doug Gottlieb has experienced.
For example: No, Doug, Jenner's decision is not similar to the way you wish you were a better looking, or better in general, man.
I'm not sure what he means when he says calling Jenner "brave" is a "lame conversation ender" but needless to say, it's completely nonsensical and ridiculous.
Gottlieb continues by saying that ESPN's decision to give Jenner the Arthur Ashe award for courage at the ESPYs this year is basically a ratings ploy, and that Lauren Hill, the 19-year-old basketball player who died of brain cancer in April, was more deserving:
Doug... please. Just shut up. Of course the media outlets like Vanity Fair and ESPN are in it for the money. But don't make us choose between the woman who died before her time to the woman who didn't live until yesterday. It's a needless comparison that takes away from the story at hand.
Basically: Gottlieb was looking for ways to cut down what should have been a great way to kick off LGBT Pride Month, and we're not sure why. Why the dickishness, Doug? Talk about something else if you're just going to be negative. Thanks.
