World’s Wildest Pope Chases: Conan O’Brien Sketch Wins The Internet
As brilliant as this Conan O'Brien video piece was on Thursday night, I was a little annoyed that he kept referring to it as "fake news" as it was being played. There was a perfect opportunity here for an Orson Welles War of the Worlds situation, in which some of our more gullible citizens may have believed that the Pope was for real involved in a freeway car chase with police, and then tried to make a getaway on foot.
"I don't know why you're giggling, because this is serious. This guy is a stranger, he's in a strange land, he's apparently lost somewhere in America in his Popemobile, I don't know, I'm worried bout the guy! ... There he is! He's on the highway, he's driving pretty fast ... he's all by himself on the highway! ... The police are on him now!" ...
Just when you think you've got late night TV figured out: 1. Colbert, 2. Kimmel, 3. Fallon, along comes a piece like this to remind you that Conan will always be in the conversation. Barring the early days of Letterman, his remote sketches have always been the best. And this Pope chase is just, well, infallible.
