There's nothing scarier in sports IMO than weightlifting, because when things go wrong, brother, they go wrong. Here's Venezuela's Genesis Rodriguez Gomez in the women's 53kg Group A at the Pan Am Games on Sunday in the clean-and-jerk at 106kg. It did not go well.
In other sports, when you collapse, all the happens is that you fall to the ground. In weigfhtlifting, you have the added dimension of a large weight hurtling toward you in mid-air that could potentially kill you. Not for me -- I only lift puppies and beer. Amazingly, Gomez succeeded on her second attempt at the same weight, and then went on to complete a 109kg lift to get the silver medal. Yes, look at the video above and then realize the 20-year-old got second place.
Rusmeris Villar Barboza of Colombia won the gold.
Elsewhere in the Pan Am Games, the U.S. beat Cuba 5-2 in baseball, as Angels prospect Nate Smith (Double-A Arkansas Travelers) went six innings for the win.
The U.S. lost its opener to Puerto Rico on Saturday, 10-9. It meets Colombia today in Toronto as the round-robin portion of the tournament continues.
