Did Two Texas HS Football Players Target, Hit Ref During Game? (VIDEO)
Brutal. It sure looks like two John Jay High School football players purposely hit a referee during a game in Texas, blindsiding him in the open field and then spearing him while he was on the ground. Officials are investigating the play that happened on Friday towards the end of the game against Marble Falls High in San Antonio.
San Antonio Express News: “I’ve coached 14 years and I’ve never seen anything like it,” Marble Falls coach Matt Green said.
John Jay was trailing 15-9 with one minute remaining in the game. According to tweets by some players and fans, the hits may have been in retaliation for alleged bad calls and/or racial slurs by the ref.
Both players were ejected. Northside ISD athletic director Stan Laing said the video was “very disturbing.” Laing said the district is investigating the sequence of events leading up to the play, and the University Interscholastic League is aware of what happened.
“The question of what instigated that is what we’re trying to figure out,” Laing said.
UPDATE: The two players have been suspended while the league continues to investigate.
