Female Fight Clubs Are Now A Thing, Apparently (And One Is Topless)
Would you pay to see women fight each other in a small gym, knowing that any minute the cops could storm in and bust the entire operation? Of course you would: and you'd even pay extra to see the cops. So apparently there are several female fight clubs in the New York City area, and PIX11 news did a story on one of them, in Brownsville, Brooklyn.
Although it may seem sad and exploitative to entice low-income women into the ring to beat on each other for money, the Brooklyn Girls Fight Club is also part inspiring and full of hope. The founder, Samson Styles, started the club after he was released from state prison. Styles:
"We've got some known females in the community causing havoc and involved in these fights, so we said 'Look, why don't you do it for some money?' "
And some of the women have used the money to help their children, or in some cases they have even been able to afford to move out of assisted housing and get better jobs.
Former fighter Kia was a single mother of three boys. She now works in construction.
"The money came in handy. I used it for my kids," she said.
Danielle was able to move her family to Delaware with her winnings.
Coincidentally, also breaking today is a story about an all-female fight club in Berlin, Germany. This club is private and the women fight for free, but the cuts and bruises are just as real. London Daily Mail:
The club was started in 2010 by female fighters Anna Konda and Julia 'Red Devil' Babskaya, 27, from Russia, as a place for women to come and fight.
Anna was very slim when she was younger, but is now much 'bigger' she told Vice UK but she said she could not keep her trim figure forever.
She said about her wrestling: "I don't enjoy the pain of others. I enjoy my own power and having control. I guess sometimes this can amount to the same thing for my prey."

Photographer Katarzyna Mazur has captured the East Berlin-based club in a series of stark portraits of the women in fighting gear or even topless.
