First Openly Gay Action Sports Athlete Details How He Almost Came Out At Sochi
Pursuing a career in freestyle skiing is kind of insane. The trouble is, when you're as good at launching yourself off the side of a mountain as Gus Kenworthy, you don't really have much of a choice. Dude came back from Sochi with a silver medal in the Slopestyle event and a huge social media following after alerting the world to Russia's stray dog epidemic, then he was all like, "Yup, and I'm gay."
Turns out, he almost came out on a live broadcast during the actual Olympics. Gulp.
"They had warned people that, if you're gay...try not to show it because it's very unsafe and not accepted," Kenworthy told Conan O'Brien. "And I was like, 'That's bullshit.'"
"I had a boyfriend at the time, I talked about landing the best run ever, kissing him at the bottom. That would be my way of telling everyone. I'm glad it didn't happen, because I hadn't told my mom, my dad, my brothers -- it would have not only been a shock to the sport and to the Olympics but my family would have been like, 'What the hell!'"
Ya, and you know who else would've been like, "What the hell"? Vladimir Putin. Probably a good idea to steer clear of the whole "protesting gay rights" in a place that accepts neither protests nor gay rights.
