I Can’t Stop Watching This: Kid Totally Crushes It On ‘America’s Got Talent’
June 8 / Rick Chandler / SportsGrid
America's Got Talent is a bit of a mystery to me -- I can't remember ever watching it more than once or twice, I don't know the rules, and I'm frightened by all the lights and buzzers. But I know that Simon Cowell is a judge, and he's a bit of a jerk to the bad contestants.
Anyway, I caught this performance from Tuesday night's show on the internet and it kind of blew me away.
Her name is Grace VanderWaal and she's 12 years old, from Suffern, NY. She captivated the judges and the audience with her original song on the ukulele, I Don't Know My Name, which she sang as her audition. Take a listen to this:
I could have done without Howie Mandel's mewling, saccharine reaction, and Cowell's proclamation that VanderWaal is "the next Taylor Swift" was pretty over the top (hey, no pressure, kid.). There's also something called a "golden buzzer" which has me terribly confused, but apparently it means she's going on to the semifinal round.
And did someone forget to tell that one judge with her breasts spilling out of her dress that this wasn't a dominatrix gathering, but a show that included kids? Hope she felt at home.
Judges aside, it was an inspiring, empowering performance by a young and talented performer -- a song about being yourself and chasing your dreams. Everyone should hear it at least once. And when you're in a bad mood, repeat as necessary.
