Live-Action Mario Kart-Skateboarding Mash-Up Makes Us Wonder Why It Doesn’t Already Exist
Times are hard for the once mighty Nintendo. By the early 2000s, there was hardly a household in America that didn't own a console made by the Japanese gaming company. Now they're almost exclusively a purveyor of Pokémon products for little kids and Legend of Zelda pipe dreams for those of us old enough to remember the adventure game's mind-blowing, immersive world of dimension hopping puzzles.
Here's a thought: remake Mario Kart -- a ubiquitous title from the 90s -- using skateboards. Why not? These guys did and it looks absolutely incredible.
Shot using drones that followed a motorized longboard, a guy dressed as Luigi races around the backstreets of Los Angeles avoiding green shells and Bullet Bills and molten lava. Not only is it totally rad, visually speaking, but the concept seems 100-times better than the franchise's recent tweaks, which usually just involve incorporating a variety of similarly boring vehicles or adding additional drivers to your kart. Longboard Mario Kart would be like a mash-up of Wave Race, Tony Hawk and Twisted Metal.
[Insert noise of adult man screaming at the top of his lungs]
If any of you know Nintendo's iconic overlord, Shigeru Miyamoto, please let him know this is a better idea than anything the game's developers have come up with in the last 15 years.
