Now Sarah Palin Is Blaming President Obama Because Her Son Was Arrested For Domestic Violence
As theater of the absurd, Sarah Palin is a Broadway hit -- a show that's going to run for 30 weeks straight, or however long that Donald Trump stays in the race (I have my doubts that it will be that long).
Whenever Palin surfaces on the political scene, it reminds me of when the Darlings turn up on The Andy Griffith Show -- they're the banjo-picking family that come down from the mountains periodically to find a husband for dim-witted but pretty Darlene, or a job for one of their sons, or a restraining order against rock-throwing mental deficient Ernest T. Bass.
But here's the difference: despite their ignorant, simple ways, the Darlings have hearts of gold. Sarah Palin does not.
As you know, she endorsed Donald Trump on Tuesday with a rambling Iowa stump speech that was equal parts demagoguery and Klingon. At one point she declared that she was tired of America handling all of the world's "squirmishes," convinced in her heart that she was using the correct word (as Trump noticeably winced at her side). The rest of the world calls them "skirmishes", but forget it, she's rolling.
Today was no better, although the naked demagoguery was turned to 11. As you also may know, her son, Track, was arrested in a domestic violence dispute on Monday in which he allegedly hit his wife and waved a rifle. In a speech today, Palin called the incident "the elephant in the room" (it isn't), and declared it a tragic byproduct of senseless war (Trap is a veteran).
Just kidding! She blamed the entire thing on President Obama.
“It starts from the top,” Palin said. “The question though it comes from our own president, when they have to look at him and wonder, do you know what we go through, do you know what we’re trying to do to secure America and to secure the freedoms that have been bequeathed us? So when my own son is going through what he goes through, coming back, I can certainly relate with other families who feel these ramifications of some PTSD and some of the woundedness that our soldiers do return with.”
Again, you'll just have to roll with "woundedness," because there are bigger things to worry about here.
In his online column today, Jeff Pearlman said he was ready to feel sorry for Sarah Palin, who had to watch her son change, become hardened, become different, due to serving his country overseas. But then she went and converted her kid into "political ammo", and that broke the spell. Pearlman:
I never heard (and still haven’t heard) one peep from Palin about Bush rushing into the Middle East after 9/11. I never heard (and still haven’t heard) one peep from her about the cuts in funding (GOP-led) for support services. Seriously, not one peep. Which makes this a unique form of ugliness, where a person (Palin) is sorta thrusting her son forward as an example of presidential incompetency but — in truth — turning his difficulties into political gamesmanship.
That Palin is tone-deaf to all of this is no surprise. By floating some vague notion that Obama doesn't know what soldiers are going through, and is somehow disrespecting the troops, she's actually the one who is doing them a disservice -- using them as political cannon fodder.
As our own Jake O'Donnell said this morning: "I love how her attempts to sound smart make it clear the only thing she's read is The Constitution."
There was also a remark about anime porn but I can't find it in my email.
