Ronda Rousey Breaks Down On Ellen, Says She Considered Suicide After Holm KO
Everyone loves seeing a cocky, dominant sports figure dethroned, and MOST everyone takes at least some pleasure in seeing them embarrassed -- especially when you're talking about combat sports. That's pretty much the allure of any Floyd Mayweather Jr. fight: we're all hoping someone knocks his stupid teeth out of his stupid mouth because he's stupid and fuck him. In a vacuum, the same would go for female fighters, but in reality, it's different watching a woman get her ass kicked -- no matter how many asses we've seen her kick in the past. Women are objectively more caring (and human) than men, so enjoying their utter destruction in a mixed martial arts competition is complicated by the empathy they elicit from the non-psychopaths among us.
That did not seem to be the case in the immediate aftermath of Ronda Rousey's crushing defeat at UFC 193. The internet celebrated Holly Holm's brutal knockout kick-to-the-neck with an unprecedented deluge of shareable mockery. It was meme city for, like, a week.
According to Rousey, the ridicule wasn't necessary to put her in her place, as it were. She immediately felt the gravity of her entire superstar existence come crashing down to Earth
"I was literally sitting there and thinking about killing myself," she tearfully sobbed to Ellen DeGeneres on Tuesday. "And that exact second I’m like, 'I’m nothing. What do I do anymore? And no one gives a shit about me anymore without this.'"
"To be honest, I looked up and I saw my man Travis was standing up there and I looked up at him and I was like, I need to have his babies. I need to stay alive."
Holy shit. Hopefully we'll all exercise a bit more humility in the event Holly Holm does the same thing to her in their rematch (or, ya know, in general).
