Simone Biles Shuts Down ‘DWTS’ Judge With Epic Gold Medal Burn
Simone Biles became America's newest sweetheart after her stunning, record-breaking performance at the Rio Olympics in 2016. Her five gold medals were the most in U.S. gymnastics history, and her bubbly personality and gajillion-watt smile only served to make her more impressive to the adoring public.
However, one doesn't just become the most decorated gymnast of all-time without having an insane competitive streak - a lesson that 'Dancing With The Stars' judge Carrie Ann Inaba and host Tom Bergeron learned all too well on Monday night after she completed a fiery paso doble with partner Sasha Farber and guest dancer Brittany Cherry.
Inaba's critique of Biles performance was largely positive, although she did note that while her emotional connection to the music has improved, she'd still like to see her come out of her shell a bit more. Even while receiving objectively glowing reviews on her dance, Biles remained nearly stonefaced - receiving the praise and the criticism with equal stoicism.
When Bergeron inquired as to why she didn't appear more excited about Inaba's compliments, she snickered a bit and replied that "smiling doesn't win you gold medals." The audience was impressed if not a bit taken aback by her brazenness, and Inaba immediately threw her hands up as if to say "touché."
"Smiling doesn't win you gold medals" is going to be the new t-shirt slogan of a generation. Is it a bit of an overreaction to compare a reality TV dancing show to becoming one of the greatest athletes in the history of international sports competitions? Eh, yeah probably. But again, becoming an elite gymnast is one of the most strenuous and demanding lifestyles there is.
To be the best at something that requires so much sacrifice, Biles must really love winning. She likely reacts that way in just about every competitive situation, whether it's the Olympics or a game of backyard badminton at a family cookout. And to be fair, her dance really was fantastic.
