SportsNation's Star Wars Halloween Special Looks Like A Terrible, Terrible Idea (Video)
Few things scared me in childhood: not even The Exorcist, or the thought of my parents getting a divorce (two birthdays!). But then along came a thing called The Stars Wars Holiday Special, a half hour of television nightmare fuel that scarred my soul in ways I still can't explain. (A sample is seen below).
It was 1978, a year after the original Star Wars: A New Hope came out, and someone thought it would be a good idea to bring all of the main characters together to celebrate Christmas (only they didn't call it that in the special, because outer space). It was seen only once, and George Lucas has spent the rest of his life trying to suppress the video, because no one in it looked like they were happy to be there, and it was so awful I'm surprised that any of it stuck to the tape. Only now because of YouTube and social media, it's widely available.
And tonight, so is this: The SportsNation Star Wars Halloween Special. It's set to premiere tonight at 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN2, so set your DVR to 'fun'!
Ever wish you could watch Michelle Beadle fight Darth Vader with a lightsaber? Me neither! But that's included in this preview clip. See this is what happens when your sports network is acquired by Disney. Enjoy?
It brings back such awful, awful memories.
The horror ...
ESPN2’s SportsNation will celebrate Halloween this Thursday, October 30, with a 30-minute Star Wars special at 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN2. Michelle Beadle will host the show as Han Solo along with commentators Max Kellerman as Boba Fett and Marcellus Wiley as Yoda.
The SportsNation set will be revamped to look like the Millennium Falcon and special guests will stop by the show including C-3PO, R2D2, Chewbacca, Darth Vader, Figirin D’an and the Modal Nodes, Storm Troopers and Chopper. The special will highlight sports clips within Star Wars-inspired categories including “Best Jedi Mind Trick” and “Most Unstoppable Skywalkers.” The show will also include an exclusive first look at an upcoming episode of Disney XD’s Star Wars Rebels.
Disney obviously forgot the wise old saying: Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it. Tonight there will be a thick blanket over my television and I'll be in the back seat of my car with my hands over my ears rocking back and forth and quietly sobbing.
