Today On 'Awkward Press Conference Theater': Phil Mickelson Rips Tom Watson With Both At Same Table
You know, I'm sitting right here. I can hear you ...
As you know, Europe won the Ryder Cup again on Sunday: the eighth time in 10 meetings that the U.S. has lost the cup/trophy/Rory McIlroy drinking goblet. But in a sport where everyone wears tailored jackets and "genteel" is the secret word, the video above is quite extraordinary.
Phil Mickelson bulled his way through the china shop during Sunday's post-Ryder Cup joint press conference, ripping team captain Tom Watson in the most devastating way possible without actually mentioning his name. Mickelson outlined how former captain Paul Azinger did things so terrifically the last time the U.S. won the Ryder Cup, in 2008, and how things were so screwed up from a tactical and organizational standpoint this past weekend.
But the really amazing part was that Watson was sitting at the same table, just a few chairs away.
And there you have it: no matter how hard you try to make golf a team sport, it will always be every man for himself, as God intended. Golf is an individual sport. And Mickelson, it seems, is a rather large dick. That's OK -- golf needs more of those. Those saying that his comments "tarnished" the Ryder Cup should probably just get over it. This is a sport that needs some of the shine removed.
