We like to think Americans aren't alone in how they consume of the Tour de France -- an 112-year-old bicycle race steeped in tradition and culture. We like to tell ourselves that ignoring the actual race itself and, instead, waiting for five-second videos of the most gruesome crashes is something everyone else on Earth does. It might be, it might not. However, if it isn't, and we are the only advanced industrialized nation that treats the most impressive feat human of human will as a slapstick comedy, we'd be sad.
That being said, bicycle man fall down and go boom into tree-thing today. Hooray!
Luckily, the poor guy (Welsh rider Geraint Thomas) managed to get back on his bike and finish the rest of Stage 16, so he's ok. As for the rest of us, maybe we should talk to someone about our insatiable thirst for schadenfreude. It's becoming a problem.
