VIDEO: WWE Honors “Rowdy” Roddy Piper With Tearjerking Tribute
Professional wrestling legend "Rowdy" Roddy Piper passed away on Friday from a heart attack at the age of 61. His untimely passing has been mourned by members of the wrestling community and fans across the globe, and WWE chose to honor his memory with three minute video tribute during Monday Night Raw.
It has been a point of speculation as to how his tribute would be handled in the wake of the Hulk Hogan controversy, as many of his most memorable encounters were part of his rivalry with the currently disgraced superstar. Vince McMahon and the WWE decided to forgo including any interactions with Hogan in the montage, and it only serves to highlight just how entertaining Piper was in his own right.
Piper and Hogan's heated rivalry is part of wrestling lore, beginning with the The War to Settle The Score which was broadcast on MTV in 1985. Piper sought to strip Hogan of the WWF Championship but went on to be disqualified, leaving Hogan the victor. Their rematch lead to the inception of Wrestlemania, which has become one of the most popular professional wrestling events in the world. Wrestlemania I featured Piper and Paul Orndorff taking on Hogan and Mr. T. Hogan ended up coming through for his team and won that match as well.
Needless to say, Piper's larger-than-life antics and maniacal persona were an integral and influential part of the boom of professional wrestling in he 1980's. He was very much a part of making the WWF/WWE as successful as it is and they did a fantastic job of highlighting what he meant to wrestling, his fans and even his rivals.
