After being found guilty for culpable homicide (a lesser charge than had been sought by the prosecution), Oscar Pistorius was sentenced today by a court in Pretoria to five years in prison for the murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.
"I am of the view that a non-custodial sentence would send a wrong message to the community," judge Thokozile Masipa said about the ruling. "On the other hand, a long sentence would not be appropriate either, as it would lack the element of mercy."
Pistorius could be released on house arrest after serving 10 months in the Kgost Mampuru II prision.
