You Need To Watch John Oliver’s Mental Health Segment. Now.
It's become gun control opponents' favorite scapegoat after a mass shooting: mental illness. The trouble is, the politicians who make these tragedies out to be functions of America's insufficient mental health care system ALSO aren't very big fans of expanding access to health care, generally. They are, however, huge fans of "praying for the victims' families" and "blaming the crazies for wreaking havoc," offering nothing substantive to stem the tide of wanton violence aside from arming everyone to teeth so we can all shoot it out next time someone decides to open fire on a school campus.
Um, ya. No.
According to John Oliver, less than 5% of people who use guns to kill others suffer from some sort of mental illness. It's a red herring. Worse still, by waiting until the next mass shooting to discuss mental health, we further stigmatize it, which only reinforces America's practice of throwing the mentally ill in prison, or worse. At least half of the people killed by police each year are mentally ill.
