Is Carmelo Anthony Involved In the Knicks Coaching Search? Uh..Maybe?
The Knicks have seemingly done a terrible job with their head coaching search. Much of the fans distaste for the search is thanks to the reliance on sticking with the triangle and Phil's outright determination to prove that it's still a relevant system. Besides failing to find a head coach (the Knicks finally interviewed someone other than Kurt Rambis yesterday), the relationship between Carmelo Anthony and Phil Jackson has been called into question. In fact, outside the coaching search, Melo's Knicks future has been the hottest topic on Knicks fans minds. Have the Knicks reached their apex with Melo as their "star"? What can they even get for Melo? Would he waive his no trade clause? All questions that the common fan has no answer to. Thankfully, today, Carmelo gave us a glimpse of what's going inside the Knicks organization.
Melo stopped by the Dan Patrick show and told us he could teach the triangle in about an hour. He mostly was politically correct (refusing to pick who he would start a team with), deferring to LeBron as the best player in the NBA, and saying it doesn't matter what system you play in. When it came down to the coaching search, Melo could only chuckle when asked if he'll have input. He "hopes so". Except he hasn't really talked to Phil about it yet. We guess at least the Knicks don't cater to their best player, like how LeBron is the Cavs head coach and general manager? When asked what will happen when his current contract is up, Melo hopes to sign a new contract.
While the interview is not all that informative, it's a good look for Carmelo who isn't oversaturated by media appearances. He comes off really likable. Melo is still really good at his job (scoring). If only Phil Jackson was nearly as good at his (hiring a coach, building a team, not being so damn stubborn with the triangle, etc.)
