3 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year Bets
The AFC hasn’t had a player win the offensive rookie of the year award since Vince Young did it all the way back in 2006 with the Tennessee Titans. Fast forward 14 years and the AFC has plenty of options to take home the hardware. Here the top three candidates to win the award in 2020.
Miami Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa (FanDuel +800)
During his time at Alabama, Tagovailoa was known for his pinpoint accuracy and his ability to move around in the pocket. Obviously, a major hip injury impacted his junior year while impacting his draft stock, where he “fell” to the fifth pick.
Since Dan Marino retired, the Dolphins have had 21 different quarterbacks in 20 years, and Tua is looking to change that trend. He will have a dynamic playmaker to throw the ball to with DeVante Parker coming off his best season as a pro while having a formidable one-two punch of Jordan Howard and Matt Breida running the ball.
Miami invested heavily in the draft with their offensive line to protect their franchise quarterback, but they are inexperienced, and their play will be critical for Tua’s success. Initial reports coming out of camp are that Tua has been sharp while making the occasional rookie mistake.
Indianapolis Colts RB Jonathan Taylor (FanDuel +950)
Jonathan Taylor earned Heisman votes every year since his freshman year. He nearly totaled over 2,000 rushing yards in all three years he was a Badger and was the first player in NCAA history to rush for more than 6,000 yards in a three-year span.
Just look at those numbers!
Taylor also produced the second-highest Pro Football Focus grade in FBS during his time at Wisconsin. Also, according to PFF, the Colts have the best offensive line in the NFL and have future Hall of Famer Phillip Rivers at quarterback. One roadblock sitting in Taylor’s way is the fact Marlon Mack is listed as the starting running back.
Expect both backs to get many carriers, with Taylor eventually becoming the lead back and putting up a monster year.
Cincinnati Bengals QB Joe Burrow (FanDuel +250)
Back-to-back odds-on favorites (Kyler Murray and Saquon Barkley) have won the award the past couple of years, and the 2020 favorite, Joe Burrow, looks to continue to the trend.
Burrow is coming off statistically the best college football season of all time, and contrary to what people are saying, he walks into a pretty good situation in Cincinnati. The Bengals have plenty of talent within the skill positions.
Joe Mixon can take the heat off the passing game as he ranks as one of the league’s best backs. A.J. Green looks to return to form before injuries have derailed him in previous seasons while Tyler Boyd is coming off back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons. The Bengals have John Ross as an option to stretch the field and try to use him like the Chiefs use Tyreek Hill.
Burrow also has Tee Higgins, the talented rookie receiver out of Clemson to throw to, and Auden Tate as a fifth option isn’t too shabby. Burrow’s key will be if the Bengals offensive line can go from being one of the worst in the league to just middle of the pack.
The return of 2019 first-round pick Jonah Williams will help, but the offensive line will be crucial if Burrow is to win the Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2020.
