Boston Celtics vs. Philadelphia 76ers News and Notes
Two of the best teams in the East, in fact, one of them the top team in the Eastern Conference, hook up for a rematch in Philadephia just two days after their first meeting. The Celtics will try to avenge a 117-109 loss to the Sixers when they hook up for the second-leg of their back-to-back set Friday night in Philly. Joel Embiid continued his MVP type season, leading the Sixers with a game-high 42 points to go along with ten boards in the big time statement win. Tobias Harris chipped in with 22, while Ben Simmons had a full line of 11 points, 8 rebounds, and 8 assists. Again, Philly was without guard Seth Curry, who remained out due to league health and safety protocols but is probable for Friday. While Curry was a significant absence, Boston played again with an even more immense chasm in their lineup.
Jayson Tatum missed his third straight game, following three consecutive postponements for the Celtics, meaning he hasn’t played since January 8.
Jaylen Brown continued attempting to pick up the slack putting up a team-high 26 points in the loss. Marcus Smart, usually known for his defense, also boosted his offense, scoring 25 while the recently returned Kemba Walker had 19 points and six assists. Boston will try to topple the kings of the East again without Tatum, who will continue to recover from COVID-19.
Boston has won just once in three games since coming back from that three-game health and safety protocol break. Before facing Philly, the Celts suffered an embarrassing 105-75 loss to the Knicks on Sunday. Brown had a game-high 25, but just one other player scored in double-digits for shorthanded Boston as Marcus Smart put up 10 points in the blowout. Before dropping this one to New York, it was the Celtics on top of the East after winning five straight games.
Philadelphia comes in winners of three of their past four games with two straight wins against the Heat to go along with Wednesday’s victory. The Sixers look to sweep the two-game set after getting swept by Boston in the playoffs last season. While the stakes are clearly different, it still means something to Philly and Embiid, who said, “You want to beat them,” following the win two days ago. The Sixers center has put up two 40-plus point games in his past three and has jumped to ninth in the NBA in scoring, banking 26.4 per game. The offensive outburst also helped Philly become the ninth highest-scoring team in the league, with almost 114 points per game.
Defensively these two teams come in very closely. Boston ranks 12th giving up 110.1 points per game, while the 76ers are one slot back, allowing 110.3 a night. Philadelphia is much better at holding opponents to a poor percentage as the Sixers allow the NBA’s third-lowest shooting rate from the floor at 43.9 percent while the Celts are well down the list at 46.2 percent. Boston has been better defending the perimeter giving up the fifth-fewest triples in the league with just 11.5 three-pointers allowed per game.
Some interesting trends going into this one. Boston has hit the over in six of the past seven following an outright loss, while Philly has gone over in their past five home games and five as a favorite. The Sixers have also gone over in three of their past four overall, although the over has come in just twice in the past seven head-to-head meetings between Philly and Boston. It’s been a game of streaks against the spread between these two teams. The 76ers had covered in two straight against the Celtics before Boston covered four in a row, which followed Philly covering in three straight against the Celts.
