NBA Futures: Post Free Agency NBA Championship Odds Update
NBA Futures: Post Free Agency Championship Odds Update
The dust from the NBA free agency period has finally settled and the LA Clippers have emerged as the 3-to-1 favorites to capture the 2019-20 championship at the Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook.
The Clippers have added Paul George and Kawhi Leonard to last year's 48-win team that battled the Warriors in the first round of the playoffs. Los Angeles also re-signed former NBA All-Defensive Team member Patrick Beverly to a three-year contract.
Prior to their acquisition, the Clippers were available at 16-to-1 at the Westgate. VP of Risk Management and oddsmaker Jeff Sherman said that his shop sold a grand total of one ticket on the Clippers in the four days leading up to Leonard’s announcement. That ticket was worth $10.
The Lakers, who were as low as +150 at some sports books under the assumption that Leonard was signing there, are now third on the odds board at +500.
Following some shrewd free agency moves, the Milwaukee Bucks remain the favorites in the Eastern Conference. The Bucks were able to re-sign Eric Bledsoe and Khris Middleton while adding Robin Lopez to their 60-win team from last year. Milwaukee is +125 to win the East and +450 to win the NBA title.
While the free agency period is largely complete, there is still one major domino standing: Where will Russell Westbrook end up? Following George’s trade to the Clippers, Westbrook has also requested a move out of Oklahoma City. Miami appears to be the front-runner to acquire Westbrook, which would create a dynamic back court pairing with Jimmy Butler. The Heat are now 40-to-1 to win the championship after opening at 300-to-1.
The Westgate has added a number of long-term futures wagers for next season and beyond. Will the Clippers win a championship during the Leonard-George tenure in Los Angeles? The Westgate is offering -110 odds each way that the Clippers will (or won’t) win a title during the next four seasons.
And what about Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving, and the new-look Brooklyn Nets? The Westgate has already opened up odds on Brooklyn winning the 2020-21 championship, presumably with a fully-healthy roster. The Nets are 12-to-1 to win the 2020-21 title, and +450 to win a championship over the next four seasons.
The Westgate has also released NBA MVP and Rookie of the Year odds. To no one’s surprise, New Orleans’ Zion Williamson has opened as a strong favorite for Rookie of the Year betting. The former Duke Blue Devil is -150 to capture the award, followed by Ja Morant (+400) and RJ Barrett (+500).
Milwaukee's Giannis Antetokounmpo has opened as the +350 favorite to repeat as NBA Most Valuable Player, followed by Stephen Curry (+400) and James Harden (+450). The city of Los Angeles has four players at the top of the odds board. Kawhi Leonard and Paul George are each 12-to-1 for the Clippers, with Anthony Davis (10-to-1) and LeBron James (12-to-1) in the purple-and-gold.
