San Antonio Spurs vs. Los Angeles Lakers News and Notes
So far, so good for the Spurs trip to la-la land. San Antonio was able to bust their four-game losing streak with a win against the LA Clippers on Tuesday night. The Spurs took advantage of Paul George being a late scratch for the Clippers while surviving a 30-point night from Kawhi Leonard. San Antonio was powered by Patty Mills’ 27 points off the bench toward the 116-113 win. The Spurs were able to get a ton of production from the pine in this one, with 57 points coming off the bench. LaMarcus Aldridge also chipped in with 14 in his first game back since December 27 after missing three games with a left knee issue.
Now the Spurs will shift their focus on the other LA team that helped send them into their early-season tailspin. The Lakers handed San Antonio back-to-back losses in Texas to extend their losing streak. LA outscored SA 230-210 in the two-game series and will look to make it six in a row against the Spurs, a streak dating back more than two years. San Antonio last beat the Lakers in December 2018 and haven’t won in LA since a 143-142 OT thriller in October of that year.
The world champion Lakers have picked up right where they left off last season. LA is on a four-game win streak and is sitting pretty at a Western Conference-best 6-2. As expected, the Lakers’ dynamic duo are leading the way. LeBron James leads the team with 23.9 and 7.4 assists per game, while Anthony Davis leads the Lakers pulling down 9.0 rebounds and 1.6 steals a night. Davis is also getting it done on the floor’s offensive end as the team’s second-leading scorer putting up 22.3 per game.
LA has also gotten help from a pair of their new acquisitions. The reigning NBA Sixth Man of the Year and free-agent addition from the Clippers has been the go-to guy from the Lakers bench. Montrezl Harrell is leading LA with 12.4 points and 7.5 rebounds per game off the bench. Point guard Dennis Schroder, who the Lakers acquired in an off-season trade with the Thunder, is third on the team in scoring, with almost 16 points a game and only trails LeBron in assists, dishing out five dimes a night.
The mighty Lakers find themselves near the top of the league in a host of categories. LA is tenth in the league scoring 114 points per game, fourth in field goal percentage, and fifth in three-point field goal percentage. The Lakers don’t just leave it on the offensive side of the court as they are one of the league’s top defensive teams as well. LA is second in the NBA, giving up just 104 points per game, and their 43.7 opposing field goal percentage allowed ranks fifth in the league. If that’s not enough, they are also only one rebound per game away from the league-lead in that category.
San Antonio can only really hang with the champs with three-ball efficiency. The Spurs shoot nearly 40 percent from behind the arc, third-best in the league but only hit about 12 per game, putting them in the bottom ten of the NBA. The Spurs are mediocre at best in most areas on the offensive and defensive end, finding themselves in the bottom half of the league in nearly every major stat category.
Because this game is the front-end of a back-to-back for the Lakers, it’s worth keeping an eye on LeBron and AD’s status. Both are playing thru nagging minor injuries, and LA could choose to rest their superstars, although as of now, consider them likely to suit up.
As previously mentioned, the Lakers have dominated the Spurs lately, winning five straight, including four covers during that span. Points have been tough to come by in recent head-to-head meetings as the under has been the play in four of their past five matchups.
In fact, LA has been going under a lot this season as the Lakers went below the number in each of their past six games. San Antonio went under in three straight games before hitting the over in their past two contests.
