AVOID STARLIN CASTRO IN DAILY FANTASY PLAY FRIDAY, PLUS NBA PICKS
A lot of Fantasy players either set daily lineups, or play in daily Fantasy leagues such as Draft Kings, Fantasy Feud, etc. During the course of the season, each day in Major League Baseball, we'll have a short and sweet blog to help guide you with your lineup decisions. And, in the late afternoon/early evening on busy nights in MLB, we'll have an updated blog with injury news, lineup changes, etc. to help you set the best possible lineup and pad your bank account.
For Friday, April 5, there are 15 games in Major League Baseball. (DraftKings.com salaries provided in parentheses)
THE HEAVENLY SEVEN
Clint Barmes, SS, Pittsburgh ($2,700 at LAD): Barmes has managed an extra-base hit in each of his past two games. On the surface, a matchup against Los Angeles Dodgers SP Zack Greinke ($10,800) looks like an unfavorable matchup. However, Barmes has racked up seven hits, including two doubles, in 11 at-bats for a career .636 batting average against Greinke. With a 1.485 OPS against Greinke in his career, Barmes is certainly worth a look.
Ryan Braun, OF, Milwaukee ($6,000 vs. ARI): Braun is the most expensive non-pitcher available on the board Friday, so he isn't exactly a 'sleeper'. However, he is a good play and worth the money, especially if you can use some of the other lower-priced guys on this list to create salary cap space for Braun. He is 2-for-5 with two homers and four RBI in his career against Arizona Diamondbacks SP Wade Miley ($8,700).
Carlos Gonzalez, OF, Colorado ($5,500 vs. SD): Like Braun above, Gonzalez is a pretty obvious play. But you should be able to squeeze him into your lineup by using some lower-priced players, especially pitchers. Gonzalez has knocked around San Diego Padres SP Jason Marquis ($6,200), going 3-for-6 with a triple, home run and six RBI. That's an insane 1.833 OPS and 1.333 slugging percentage.
Travis Hafner, 1B/DH, N.Y. Y ankees ($3,900 at DET): Hafner is expected to draw into the lineup against Detroit Tigers SP Doug Fister ($9,500). Hafner has managed six hits with a triple, two homers and four RBI in 21 at-bats in his career against Fister, and he has drawn three walks. Hafner has a 1.067 OPS against Fister in his career, third-best among all healthy Yankees.
Jeremy Hefner, SP, N.Y. Mets ($7,500 vs. NYM): The Miami Marlins have racked up just one total run in three games this season. Hefner faced the Marlins three times, making two starts, and he posted a 1-0 record with a 2.51 ERA over 14 1/3 innings. Hefner struck out 11, walked four, and he allowed just 11 hits while the Marlins combined to hit just .204 against him. Hefner is a great play against the undermanned Marlins.
Ian Kinsler, 2B, Texas ($4,900 vs. LAA): Kinsler has enjoyed tremendous success in his career against Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Jason Vargas ($6,800). Kinsler has racked up 11 hits in 32 at-bats (.344), with five doubles, a home run, three walks and three RBI. He carries a .994 OPS into play against Vargas, and the Angels hurler has struck Kinsler out just one time.
Kyle Lohse, SP, Milwaukee ($5,000 vs. ARI): Lohse was a late addition in spring training, and now he'll make his first start with his new team. Take advantage of the low salary, as it will allow you to stock up at other positions. Lohse was 1-0 with a 0.77 ERA in two starts against the Diamondbacks last season when he was a member of the St. Louis Cardinals. He allowed just one earned run, 11 hits and four walks over 11 2/3 innings while striking out eight batters. Lohse also faces a favorable matchup, as Arizona's Miley was 1-1 with a 10.24 ERA in just 9 2/3 innings over two starts against the Brewers.
DON'T GET DOUBLED UP
Starlin Castro, SS, Chicago Cubs ($4,300 at ATL): Castro hasn't had a lot of success in his career against Atlanta Braves SP Mike Minor ($8,900), going just 3-for-12 with a double, no walks, no RBI and two strikeouts.
Derek Holland, SP, Texas ($8,600 vs. LAA): Holland hasn't had a lot of success against the Angels, and he was 2-2 with a 7.00 ERA over 27 innings in four starts against the American League West Division foes last season. 1B Albert Pujols ($5,100) has batted .462 (6-for-13) with two doubles, two homers and three RBI in his career against Holland. OF Mark Trumbo ($4,100) is batting .320 with two homers and five RBI against the Texas starter, while 2B/3B Alberto Callaspo ($3,200) is batting .355 (11-for-31) with five doubles, a home run and four RBI in his career against Holland.
Joey Votto, 1B, Cincinnati ($5,300 vs. WAS): It isn't a great sample size, but Votto is hitless in six career at-bats against Washington Nationals SP Dan Haren ($8,600). Votto also has managed just one hit in 10 at-bats over the past three games, so stay away from Votto until he gets on track.
Toronto Blue Jays OF Jose Bautista ($5,300 vs. BOS) (ankle) turned an ankle in Thursday's win against the Indians, leaving late in the game for OF Rajai Davis ($4,000). Bautista said afterward that he was fine, but it is possible the team takes the safe way and elects to keep him out of the lineup. He is just 2-for-12 (.167) in his career against Boston Red Sox SP Felix Doubront ($8,400), so even if Bautista can play it might be a good idea to avoid him for Fantasy purposes.
