DFS owners will want Jeff Skinner Thursday
The National Hockey League has eight games on tap Thursday, Oct. 23, with one nationally-televised game (Vancouver-St. Louis, 8:00pm NHL Network).
(DraftDay.com salaries in parentheses) (all times ET)
Darcy Kuemper, G, Minnesota ($15250 vs ARI): Kuemper has been on fire this season, posting two wins with a 0.67 Goals-Against Average (GAA) and two shutouts through three starts. The Wild are heavy favorites against the visiting Coyotes, who counter with G Mike Smith, who has a terrible 5.33 GAA in three outings. As such, Kuemper is a slam-dunk DFS play.
Antti Raanta, G, Chicago ($20000 at NSH): Raanta draws the start in Nashville with G Corey Crawford (upper body) dealing with an undisclosed upper-body injury. In Raanta's only appearance thus far, he blanked the Philadelphia Flyers Tuesday in Chitown. Nashville has two or more goals in all six of their games, but Raanta also has one of the best offenses in front of him to provide plenty of support.
Radim Vrbata, RW, Vancouver ($12800 at STL): Vrbata has been playing with tremendous confidence, and he really has enjoyed his time with the Sedin Twins. He has lit the lamp in four of his five games with his new team, and he has a plus-3 rating during the span with at least four shots on goal (SOG) in each outing.
Johnny Boychuk, D, Boston ($8050 at BOS): Boychuk likely has had this game circled on his calendar, as he makes his first trip back to the TD Garden as a visitor. He has cooled over the past three games, going scoreless after posting two goals and six points in the first three outings. However, he has blocked at least one shot in each game, totaling 11 blocked shots in six games. He is also no stranger to the penalty box, so he can contribute Fantasy points even when he isn't etching his name onto the scoresheet.
T.J. Brodie, D, Calgary ($9150 vs CAR): Brodie has been surprisingly effective for Fantasy owners, and his average Fantasy points per game has him among the top options at his position, but at only a fraction of the salary of some of his fellow rearguards. Brodie is averaging a point-per-game over the past seven outings, and he has blocked three or more shots in each of the past four games.
Jeff Skinner, LW-RW, Carolina ($5000 at CGY): Skinner has played just one game since returning from a concussion. While he was scoreless with a minus-1 rating in his debut Tuesday in Winnipeg, he squeezed off five shots while posting four PIM. He is very gifted offensively, and rust was to be expected. However, he has tremendous upside, and he won't last at this low, low salary for long.
Tyler Toffoli, RW, Los Angeles ($8750 vs BUF): The Kings are giant favorites against the visiting Buffalo Sabres, and goals should be aplenty for the defending champs. If so, Toffoli figures to be a big part of the offense. He has multi-point performances in three of his past four outings, and he has three goals with seven points and a plus-9 rating over the past five games, yet he comes with a very reasonable salary.
