DRAFTDAY.COM RAPID FIRE PICKS
At DraftDay.com, a 'Rapid Fire' Daily Fantasy game is available. You have five head-to-head matchups, and you simply choose which player you believe will have more Fantasy points that day. If you win a majority (at least three) of the matchups, you win. You can risk as little as $1.10 to win $2, $5.50 to win $10, $11 to win $20 (my personal favorite) or $22 to win $40. It's simple and fun.
Jon Lester, SP, Boston over Alex Wood, SP, Atlanta: Lester faces a team much more familiar with him, but he is also a much better pitcher, scoring more consistently this season. Wood has a favorable matchup, and he is at home, but I still don't trust him.
Carlos Gomez, OF, Milwaukee over Anthony Rendon, 2B-3B, Washington: Rendon is facing Cincinnati Reds All-Star SP Alfredo Simon, albeit at home, while Gomez has a favorable matchup at home against New York Mets SP Zack Wheeler, who has won just twice in the past nine starts.
Paul Goldschmidt, 1B, Arizona over Alex Gordon, OF, Kansas City: I am all over Goldschmidt in Daily Fantasy, as he could go off in Philadelphia against a struggling Kyle Kendrick. Gordon is a .308 (8-for-26) hitter against Cleveland's Josh Tomlin, but Goldschmidt has more power potential.
Adam LaRoche, 1B, Washington over Marlon Byrd, OF, Philadelphia: The left-handed hitting LaRoche is another power potential guy, and he has a favorable matchup against Simon, a right-hander who has pitched well, but who has done most of his damage on the road.
Freddie Freeman, 1B, Atlanta over Jayson Werth, OF, Washington: Freeman has really, really, really struggled lately. However, he is a facing a right-hander in San Diego Padres SP Jason Hahn who he could handle well. He has nice power potential, and Werth is hitting just .261 vs right-handed pitching as opposed to .364 against lefties.
Diamondbacks SS Nick Ahmed ($5000) has a minimum Daily Fantasy salary, and he is in the starting nine with SS Didi Gregorius resting. If you want to save salary and 'punt' the shortstop position to squeeze in a high-priced pitcher, outfielder, etc., Ahmed is another low-cost starting alternative.
BOSTON RED SOX
Red Sox 1B David Ortiz ($11550) (back) is back in the middle of the lineup. However, with such a tricky injury and a tough matchup against Tampa Bay Rays SP David Price, it might be best to see Big Papi prove his health in one full game before pulling the trigger on him again. At this price, he is a huge risk.
With OF George Springer on the 15-day disabled list, 2B-SS Kike Hernandez ($5350) gets the starting nod in center field, batting in the two-hole for manager Bo Porter. Hernandez offers salary cap relief while being useful at multiple positions. Since he'll get regular at-bats up top, he could be a nice sleeper. ... 1B-OF Jesus Guzman ($5000) is another low-cost alternative who is in the starting nine, as is OF L.J. Hoes ($6050) with his slight power potential. ... SS-3B Marwin Gonzalez (hamstring) is out, so INF Gregorio Petit is up from Triple-A and starting at shortstop. He is a last-minute add, so he might not be available with most Daily Fantasy providers. If he is, he is another minimum salary guy you can use.
Marlins C Jarrod Saltalamacchia ($7700) is getting the start at designated hitter in an American League park, and C Jeff Mathis ($5400) gets the nod behind the dish in Houston. Both are low-cost Daily Fantasy options who will save you salary for the other positions. ... 2B-3B Jeff Baker ($6150) carries a nine-game hitting streak into play, yet he remains relatively cheap. In fact, he is hitting .478 (11-for-23) with five RBI during the span with a .652 slugging percentage. Not bad.
Brewers C Jonathan Lucroy (rest) is out of the starting lineup, as C-1B Martin Maldonado ($5000) gets the start. He is a nice 'punt' option at receiver, allowing you to spend a few more dollars at other more valuable spots.
NEW YORK YANKEES
Yankees OF Ichiro Suzuki ($5000) is in the starting lineup, and that's no surprise. Ichiro is a career .421 hitter (24-for-57) with a double, triple, five RBI and an .897 OPS against Toronto Blue Jays SP Mark Buehrle. ... Yankees 3B Chase Headley ($8000) is a mid-level option with some power potential Friday against a lefty. While his average has been poor against southpaws this season, he has connected for three homers in just 67 at-bats vs LHP.
TAMPA BAY RAYS
Rays OF Matt Joyce (rest) gets the night off with OF Brandon Guyer ($6600) getting a start in left field while batting third. While working against Lester is certainly not easy, Guyer is in a position to do some damage, and he comes with a low cost.
Rangers 2B Rougned Odor ($5100) continues to hum along, posting another two-hit night Thursday at N.Y. Yankees. He has multi-hit games in four of his past nine outings. Just don't expect a lot of power.
TORONTO BLUE JAYS
Blue Jays 2B-SS Munenori Kawasaki ($6550) gets the starting nod at the hot corner, and he is in the two-hole. The regular at-bats and low salary coupled with facing fellow countryman New York Yankees SP Hiroki Kuroda makes him intriguing.
