ROLL WITH JOSH WILLINGHAM THURSDAY, PLUS NHL PICKS
A lot of Fantasy players either set daily lineups, or play in daily Fantasy leagues such as Draft Kings, Fantasy Feud, etc. During the course of the season, each day in Major League Baseball, we'll have a short and sweet blog to help guide you with your lineup decisions. And, in the late afternoon/early evening on busy nights in MLB, we'll have an updated blog with injury news, lineup changes, etc. to help you set the best possible lineup and pad your bank account.
For Thursday, April 4, there are 11 games in Major League Baseball, with eight games starting at 4:05pm ET or earlier. (DraftKings.com salaries provided in parantheses)
Alex Gordon, OF, Kansas City ($4,900 at CHW): Gordon has owned Chicago White Sox SP Gavin Floyd ($8,300) during his career, going 8-for-22 (.364) with two doubles, two home runs and four RBI. He has a .727 slugging percentage, and impressive 1.119 OPS.
Giancarlo Stanton, OF, Miami ($5,200 at WAS): Stanton has managed just one hit (a double) in seven at-bats through the first two games, and he has three strikeouts. Stanton is 3-for-13 (.231) in his career against Washington Nationals SP Jordan Zimmermann ($8,800), but all three of the hits have left the yard. The Marlins have been blanked in their first two games, but Stanton should break through with his first RBI of the season in this get-away game.
Josh Willingham, OF, Minnesota ($4,700 vs. DET): 'The Hammer' has owned the day against Detroit Tigers SP Rick Porcello ($7,000) during his career. Willingham is 5-for-8 with two doubles, two RBI and three walks. He has a gaudy 1.625 OPS during his career against the Tigers starter. 2B Jamey Carroll ($3,600) is also 6-for-17 (.353) in his career against Porcello. Don't think manager Ron Gardenhire doesn't know that nugget. Look for Carroll to draw into the lineup, making him a nice value.
Adam Dunn, 1B/DH, Chicago White Sox ($3,900 vs. KC): On Wednesday, Dunn put it on the boarrrrrrrrd, yeeeeessssss! He socked his first homer of the season, as the White Sox took batting practice against SP Ervin Santana and the rest of the K.C. pitching staff. Dunn might not fare as well Thursday, as he has a .125 career average (2-for-16) with no homers, just two RBI and eight strikeouts against Royals SP Jeremy Guthrie ($6,700).
Andrew McCutchen, OF, Pittsburgh ($5,000 vs. CHC): No one will ever confuse Chicago Cubs SP Travis Wood ($5,000) for Ferguson Jenkins or Greg Maddux, but Wood probably looks like a combination of those two hurlers of Chicago past to Pittsburgh's star outfielder. Cutch has mustered just one career hit in 11 at-bats (.091) with three strikeouts and only one run scored. At this price level, he is just too expensive based upon past history.
Dan Uggla, 2B, Atlanta ($3,900 vs. PHI): Uggla has struggled during his career, like so many others, against Philadelphia Phillies SP Cliff Lee ($12,200). Uggla is just 1-for-5 this season, and he is 4-for-22 (.182) against Lee. While he has three extra-base hits (two doubles, one home run), he also has 10 strikeouts against Lee. It wouldn't be surprising to see manager Fredi Gonzalez give INF Ramiro Pena ($3,500) a start in Uggla's place based on the percentages.
OTHER (updated at 10:31am ET - 4/4/13)
Mets 1B/2B Daniel Murphy ($4,000) is out of the lineup for manager Terry Collins. In his place, 2B Justin Turner ($3,300) makes the start. For what it's worth, Turner has a double in his only at-bat against San Diego Padres SP Eric Stults ($6,600), while Murphy is 0-for-2. But Murph is also a left-handed bat against a left-handed starter, and he dealt with a strained intercostal muscle during the spring. Turner is a righty, so Collins is simply playing the matchups. Turner could be a good, cheap start. 3B David Wright ($4,600), a.k.a. Captain America, is 3-for-6 with three walks in his career against Stults, by the way.
