Jonathan Bernier, G, Toronto ($7900 vs NSH): Bernier will draw the start between the pipes for the Maple Leafs, who look for their sixth straight victory on home ice. They have a good chance against a Nashville team they beat 4-0 Oct. 10 in the Music City. Bernier gets the nod over G James Reimer, mainly due to Bernier's recent success against the Preds. He started in the aforementioned shutout in Tennessee, and he was 1-0 with one goal allowed and 18 stops in a win at home against the Predators last season while a member of the Los Angeles Kings. And the even better news, the Predators will be using G Marek Mazanec, a rookie netminder, as head coach Barry Trotz looks for a spark with Pekka Rinne (hip) still on the shelf.
If you spend big up top, you're going to need some fillers to bring down your average per player salary. Check out these steals from the bargain bin:
Oliver Ekman-Larsson, D, Phoenix ($4900 vs COL): It's strange to look to the desert for a stud in hockey, but OEL is the man. He has posted two goals with 10 points over his past 10 games, and he has a plus-10 rating during the span. And he never met a shot he didn't like, either. He has squeezed off 23 shots on goal (SOG) during the span.
Nazem Kadri, C, Toronto ($5700 vs NSH): Kadri is back from a three-game suspension, and he will face a rookie netminder in his return. Kadri could pick up right where he left off before his penalty. He is fresh, and likely will come to the rink with a chip on his shoulder in this ultra-favorable matchup. He could very well end up centering the team's top scoring line with C Tyler Bozak (hamstring) sidelined again.
Anze Kopitar, C, Los Angeles ($5700 vs NJ): Kopitar has five goals with 10 points and a plus-6 rating over his past 10 games. Sure, Fantasy owners would like him to shoot a little more, as he has just 22 shots on goal (SOG) during the 10-game stretch. But when he does smoke the galvanized rubber, it is usually destined for the back of the net.
Johan Franzen, RW, Detroit ($4900 vs CAR): Franzen has been on fire lately, netting three goals with two helpers over his past four games. He was scoreless Tuesday against Nashville, but at this price level, he is worth a roll of the dice in a game the Red Wings are favored to win.
Ales Hemsky, RW, Edmonton ($3800 vs FLA): Hemsky has been strong lately, posting at least one point in six of his past eight games. He'll be facing a Florida Panthers team in a very winnable game, so his plus-minus rating shouldn't be too much of a concern.
Justin Peters, G, Carolina ($6000 at DET): After G Cam Ward (lower-body) looked rusty in his return, Hurricanes bench boss turns back to Peters for Thursday's start. It's a daunting task being the road team in Detroit, but if there was ever a favorable time to be in that spot, it is now. The Red Wings have dropped seven straight games, and they haven't won at home in eight outings (0-6-2). Sooner or later, the Red Wings will warm up, but Peters has been good and is worth a look.
Jeff Skinner, LW, Carolina ($4500 at DET): Another Hurricane, Skinner (upper-body) is ready to return from the Injured Reserve list. He has been dealing with a pesky UBI, but he is rested and raring to go. Skinner could get onto the scoresheet in this one, and he won't cost you an arm and leg -- or, in hockey speak, an upper-body part and lower-body part.
Tyler Bozak, C, Toronto ($3500 vs NSH): When healthy, Bozak is a tremendous bargain centering the team's top scoring line. But he continues to deal with a nagging hamstring, and is out. Avoid.
