It’s Been 8 Years Since The First League of Legends Trailer
The best way to feel old is to find out how long it's been since a major event has transpired. For example, it's been 25 years since Tiger Woods made his PGA debut at the age of 16. But for an industry that hasn't been around for decades, there aren't that many "On this day" events or memories. But on February 25th 2009, Riot Games released a teaser trailer for their new game, League of Legends.
Boy have things changed since then. At the time of the trailer, the game was in it's alpha stage and only had 17 unique champions available to play. That 17 has now grown into 134 as League of Legends has taken off into not only one of the most played games worldwide but a top tier eSport. As of September 2016, League had 100 million monthly users. That's up significantly from the 67 million monthly users in January of 2014. On top of that, the 2016 World Championships had 43 million unique viewers. It's doubtful that Riot Games foresaw this kind of growth back when the game was titled "League of Legends: Clash of Fates"
Over the years, the Summoner's Rift has been transformed from a basic pixel-y landscape to the detailed map that exists today. Even Baron Nashor has received quite the makeover.
There have been hundreds of patches, new items added, old items removed. I guess now's a good time to say RIP heart of gold.
