Don’t Be a Douche: 7 Tips for Being a Good Fantasy Commissioner
One of the most thankless jobs in the history of the world, outside of mom, dad and sewage worker, is Fantasy Football commissioner. Much like an NFL referee or a traffic cop, the better job you do, the less people notice you. I’ve been a Fantasy commissioner for a couple decades now, so I thought I’d share some tips on being a good Fantasy commissioner for the upcoming Fantasy season.
7 Tips for Being a Good Fantasy Commissioner
These tips are to help you and your Fantasy league have a smooth 2015 season, with as few bumps as possible.
1. Lay the Rules Out Early
We’re already midway through July, which means your Fantasy draft is right around the corner. Get the 2015 rules hammered out now, well ahead of your draft and ahead of any keeper decisions, and get them down in writing on a website somewhere. Some league services, like CBSSports.com and MyFantasyLeague.com, allow you to post a league constitution.
2. Have a Great Draft Party
Getting together for a live draft party is ultra important in my book as it allows everyone to see eye to eye, and it gives them a chance to build a rapport for future trades. Part of having a great draft party is making picks on a good customized Fantasy draft board, with player labels and your league’s name printed across the top.
3. Creative League Names
Speaking of league names, having a creative one helps set a league apart. Don’t just name your league something lame like “The Fantasy League.” You want to have something with character, something with pizzazz. You want the owners referring to your league’s acronym with pride. “Yeah, my 2015 DEF Draft is this weekend – I’m jacked up!” I came up with several prospective Fantasy league names here.
4. Collect League Fees Quickly
If you use LeagueSafe.com, you can have all of your owners pay in there, and that makes it easier at the end of the season, too. Get on these owners quick, though, because tracking down people after September gets tricky – especially when they start 0-4. “Awww, man, my transmission just blew, dude.”
5. Pay League Winnings Out Even Faster
Even I suck at this, so if you use LeagueSafe.com, it makes life much easier. Just pay out the winnings right from there, and you don’t even have to touch the money.
6. Replace Missing/Deadbeat Owners Quickly
This is kind of like the which-came-first, the-chicken-or-the-egg thing. If you are a great Fantasy commissioner, you rarely have to replace owners. And if you have to replace one, you likely have a nice list of alternate owners waiting to get in. If you do have to replace a guy, though, make sure the guy knows you’re replacing him before he hears it from others, or else you just look like a douche. The smartest move is to tell him early in the season, “Hey, we notice you’re not setting your lineup. If you can’t keep up, we’ll have to replace you.” Then, it’s on them. You warned them. No hard feelings.
7. Be a Fun Commissioner
You want to be someone that the rest of the owners love talking to, so be creative and fun. Come up with cool ideas, like rivalry week, where you match up owners, and the winner gets to change the loser’s team name for one week. Maybe make your league a themed Fantasy league, based around “Seinfeld” or “The Simpsons.”
Being a good Fantasy commissioner is very important to your league’s success. Make sure you get ahead of any issues and that all of the owners feel that they are being treated fairly!
