The Capitals are off to a great start this season, securing six points through their first four games, but they will be without the services of their top player for at least their next four contests. Ovechkin is one of a host of Capitals’ players who has been ruled out due to the league’s COVID-19 protocols. Evgeny Kuznetsov, Ilya Samsonov, and Dmitry Orlov were also played on the COVID-19 related absence list. Head coach Peter Laviolette said that there was a positive test among the players and that all four are currently in quarantine. The Capitals were also recently fined $100,000 by the NHL for violating COVID-19 protocols.
Ovechkin has gotten off to a strong start this season, racking up one goal and four assists, and he has put together one of the greatest careers in NHL history. He led the league with 48 goals last season, which he’s done in seven of the past eight years.
