Buccaneers Almost Cut Leonard Fournette in December

Before there was “Playoff Lenny” and “Lombardi Lenny”, Fournette was a healthy scratch in Week 14. Head coach Bruce Arians met with Fournette after that contest and told him that he needed to embrace his role and stop complaining about his usage, and that’s exactly what Fournette did. Of course, Jones going down with COVID-19 and a fractured pinky helped alleviate those playing-time concerns, and Fournette was able to run with the Buccaneers’ lead-back job during the playoffs.
Fournette is an unrestricted free agent this offseason, but NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reports that the Bucs would like to bring Fournette back in 2020. It remains to be seen if that will happen, but “Lombardi Lenny” will live on as a hero in Tampa Bay regardless.
