The Cleveland Browns’ prospect of making the NFL post-season is starting to look a whole lot better.
Burt Lauten reports that key defensive cogs, Cam Heyward and T.J. Watt and centre Maurkice Pouncey will not be travelling to Cleveland for the Pittsburgh Steelers’ Week 17 encounter with the Browns. Heyward and Watt rank fourth and fifth, respectively, in tackles this season on a Steelers unit that ranks second in total defence and second in scoring defence. These defensive absences are in addition to Joe Haden, tested positive for covid-19, and Terrell Edmunds, sidelined with a shoulder injury. Despite these notable absences, the Steelers defence is the sixth-highest priced unit at FanDuel.
Pouncey joins Ben Roethlisberger as the other inactive on the offensive side of the ball. That means that Mason Rudolph and his 176.5 passing yards per game will be taking snaps from J.C. Hassenauer.
All of this is good news for the Browns as they face a near must-win scenario to be included in the NFL post-season. Although the Browns aren’t without their own lineup concerns as they continue to resolve a covid outbreak within their team, their chances of playing in wild card weekend are aided by the Steelers’ missing pieces.
