McCaffrey and the Panthers have held out hope that he would be able to return to the lineup this week vs. the Washington Football Team, but the chances of that happening are getting slimmer by the day. McCaffrey was unable to practice on Wednesday, and frankly, it just doesn’t make sense for him to suit up at this point. There’s still a chance it could happen if he practices on Thursday or Friday, but McCaffrey is too important to the Panthers to risk playing him in a meaningless game.
If McCaffrey is ruled out, Mike Davis should once again serve as the Panthers’ lead back. He has seen his playing time decline a bit recently – he played on just 54% of the Panthers’ offensive snaps last week – but his 14 carries were still easily the most on the team.
The Panthers will head to Washington this week, and they’re currently listed as 1.5-point underdogs on FanDuel Sportsbook. Washington represents a tough matchup for the Panthers’ offense, ranking third in the league in Football Outsiders’ defensive DVOA.
