Gordon Hayward (finger) Uncertain Wednesday vs. Cavaliers

Hayward suffered an avulsion fracture on the fifth finger of his shooting hand during the preseason. The injury isn’t considered serious, but he did not return to action in any of the Hornets’ remaining preseason games. His status for Wednesday’s season-opener vs. the Cavaliers is uncertain, but there is optimism that he’ll be able to suit up. He’s been able to get in full workouts recently, and we should have a more definitive update on his status on Tuesday.
The Hornets made a splash by acquiring Hayward during the offseason, shelling out $120M over four years to acquire his services. Hayward had other suitors during free agency – mostly notably the Pacers – but no one else was willing to commit that much money.
He was solid in his final year with the Celtics, averaging 17.5 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 4.1 assists per game, but it remains to be seen if he will ever be the same player that he was before his devastating leg injury back in 2017.
